Things That Go Buzz in the Garden-Installment 2

This is a newly started nest of the bald-faced hornet (Dolichovespula maculata). It is attached to the roof eaves on the garage at the house in Madison that my family moved out of seven years ago and still owns. At this stage it looks exactly like a Polistes wasp nest except for the golfball-sized paper cover over the comb; and the founding queen is the only adult hornet in the nest.
